চলচ্চিত্রে মুক্তিযুদ্ধ

প্রতি বছর স্বাধীনতা ও বিজয় দিবসে TVতে বিশেষ অনুষ্ঠান দেখান হয় । থাকে গানের অনুষ্ঠান, স্মৃতি কথা, আর আলোচনা । আর থাকে চলচ্চিত্র । এই লেখা মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চলচ্চিত্র নিয়ে, একজন সচেতন দর্শকের দৃষ্টি থেকে । আশা করি চলচ্চিত্রপ্রেমীদের ভাল লাগবে ।

Arif is free

Drishtipat and E-Bangladesh are reporting that cartoonist Arif has been released from his six month incarceration.  This blog wishes Arif well for the path ahead.  Integrating back to the society will be difficult, but we want him to know that the worst is over.  And we want him to know that he has wellwishers around the world.

This blog thanks all those who helped Arif in his struggle: other bloggers — particularlyDhaka Shohor and his comrades at Unheard Voices; writers, petitioners, and other activists; and most of all, Barrister Sara Hossain and her team.  We are not going to change the world overnight, but your actions prove that we can improve the world one step at a time.

And finally, this blog notes the indignity our senior editors have brought on themselves through their rank cowardice.

বিদেশে একুশে

ঢাকায় শেষ বার একুশে কাটিয়েছিলাম ১৯৯১ সালে ।  এরশাদ সরকারের পতন ঘটে গেছে কয়েকমাস হল ।  নির্বাচনের আর এক সপ্তাহ বাকি ।  সারা শহরে নির্বাচনী উত্তেজনা ।  কিন্তু সে উত্তেজনা আজকালকার মত হিংসাপূর্ণ নয় ।  আর তাই, আমরা মহল্লার বন্ধুরা — আট দশ জন হব, Class 8 থেকে SSC/O’Level এর জন্য পড়ছি — সবাই মাঝ রাতে শহীদ মিনারে যেতে পেরেছিলাম কোনো মুরুব্বি ছাড়াই ।

ঠিক বারোটার সময় শাহাবুদ্দিন সাহেব আসলেন, জনতার তালির মাঝে ফুল রাখলেন ।  তারপর একে একে আসলেন রাজনৈতিক নেতারা, কোন গন্ডগোল ছাড়াই শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদন করলেন ।  তারপর আসলেন বিভিন্ন সুশীলরা — তখন বোধ হয় এই কথাটা বলা হত না, তা হলে ওনাদের নাম কি ছিল? 

১৯৯১-এ বাংলাদেশে গনতন্ত্রের যাত্রা সবে শুরু ।  এরপর দেশে গনতন্ত্র আসল, আবার চলেও গেল ।  আর সেই একুশের কয়েক মাস পর বাবা-মা’র সাথে আমি চলে আসলাম বিদেশে ।  এর পর বহু বার দেশে গেছি, কিন্তু কখনোই একুশে’র সময়ে নয় ।  গত ১৬ বছরের মত এবারো একুশে কাটল বিদেশে ।

Some time ago, my brother talked about the Giant Rat of Sumatra, er New Guinea. Well, islands are conducive for things like Giant Rats, and other odd-sized animals. Islands typically don’t have large carnivores — not enough food supply for their survival. So, in the absence of large carnivores, smaller carnivores and herbivores grow bigger than their mainland counterparts. And at the same time, large herbivores tend to shrink over time. That’s why islands could have Dwarf Elephants. These phenomena are called island gigantism and insular dwarfism respectively.

Change in Jamaat

Last November, as senior leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh made a series of pointed statements about the Liberation War, I asked: why did Jamaat change its stance (see here)?  A recent Shamokal news item may provide some clue.  The article (see here) reports that a leadership change in Jamaat is imminent.  It notes the pressure the party is under on the war crimes issue.  Plus, there are corruption allegations against those leaders who served in the last government.  If this report is true, then what conjectures can we draw about Jamaat’s changed rhetoric last year?  And what are the implications of a leadership change in Jamaat?

Waiting for the next speech

Today is 7 March.  On this day 37 years ago, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made the most well known speech in Bangla.  I don’t know anyone who doesn’t get the goosebumps listening to …amader keu dabaye rakhte parbe na…  There is absolutely no denying the fact that the speech marks a milestone in Bangladesh’s quest for freedom.  But 37 years on, we’re still waiting for the next speech that never got made.
