2006 wishes

I’ve been told that it is traditional to wish people merry Christmas and a happy new year.  And as I haven’t sent any cards out yet, I figure that email is the only way that I’ll get the message around.  Now, being a non-Christian, I’m not sure what makes Christmas merry, but I hope you give and get heaps off great presents, not too many hangovers and nice full belly.

And as for the happy new year bit, well what is happiness all about?  Buddhists think it’s all an illusion.  Franciscans think there is happiness in poverty.  Sufis and Rastafarians sought happiness in illegal substances.  John Lennon thought happiness is a warm gun.  Clive Hamilton thinks some form of socialism delivers it.  There must be something in the literature, there’s even a blog about it (http://happinesspolicy.com/).

I have to confess that I’m not entirely sure what this happiness stuff is about.  Being a bit of a traditionalist, let me wish that in the new year your rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are used in their most efficient way.
