Old school spy flicks

Tired of the Batmanisation of the genre?  Well, we have had a couple of old solid gold old school spy movies of late.  Last year there was the Guy Ritchie version of a 1960s TV show.

And before that we saw the screen version of a British comics.

Both have baddies seeking world domination using technology — in The man from UNCLE it’s a group Nazi revivalists using a super-nuke, in Kingsman: the Secret Service it’s a tech billionaire environmentalist seeking to cull the humanity to save the planet.  Both have suave goodies: 1960s chic in one, the other seeing the transformation of a working class lad into a gentleman, like My Fair Lady.

Interestingly, neither have any romantic angle / sexual tension at all — very Victorian, it would appear.

It occurs to me that the best old school spy flick of recent years came out of Bollywood.

A nuclear device hidden in a Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a Hindi rendition of Boney M’s Rasputin, and a cameo from Prem Chopra, Indo-Pak agents working together, and the ultimate baddies are not jihadis but….  find out for yourself.
